UNKEA is a Sudanese indigenous organization working in Nasir County
of Upper Nile State. UNKEA was founded in 2002 by a number of citizens
of Upper Nile State, with the initial purpose of fighting the deadly
disease Kala azar which affects people in Upper Nile. UNKEA’s
mandate has expanded to include basic services such as primary health
care, water and education; social development of youth and women;
economic development; and peace building. UNKEA is registered with
GOSS/SSRRC in Juba and with state authorities in Malakal, and works
in association with UN agencies, international NGOs, local authorities
and community groups. UNKEA has offices in Malakal, Nasir, and in
the three payams of Kierwan, Mandeng and Jikmir.
UNKEA’s overall budget in 2008 was $ 234,185.00 UNKEA has
137 employees in its offices in Malakal, Mandeng, Kierwan and Jikmir.
Its main projects are:
- Health: $49,960.00 grant from USAID through Save the Children/USA
to build and run two primary health care units in Kierwan and
Mandeng. Fourth year of project.
- Water: $15,075.00 grant from USAID through PACT for community
mobilization to do well and pump maintenance and hygiene awareness
in conjunction with new boreholes drilled by a commercial contractor.
Second year of project.
- Food Security: $50,250.00 grant from USAID through Food for
the Hungry to assess needs, distribute seeds and fishing equipment
and provide training to 1,000 households in Mandeng and Kierwan.
Fourth year of project.
- Education: $79,000.00 grants from US State Department through
Food for the Hungry and from DFID through Save the Children USA
for schools in Kierwan and Mandeng. Fourth year of FH program,
third year of Save the Children program.
- CPA Dissemination: $ 15,000.00 budget from UNDP for disseminating
the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and peace-building in Nasir
County, with plans to expand in 2009.
